Title: Translation and Reception of Hegel in Early Modern China

Introduction and translation of western philosophy into Chinese constituted a major part of the knowledge transfer in early modern China. Against a background marked by turbulence in intellectual world and the transformation of the Chinese language in preparing itself to articulate the foreign thoughts, the translation of Hegel at the early stage stood out with distinctive features in its understanding of Hegel as well as the the coinage of terms in Chinese. My dissertation will primarily focus on the three early translations of Hegel in China, and by applying the hermeneutic approach, it aims to reveal the underlying personal, as well as historical influence and how Hegel’s philosophy was understood at the time.
