BA programme with a core subject: Asian Studies – Profile: Art History in Asia and the Orient

The BA course in Asian Studies is not essentially divided into separate subjects but constitutes a degree qualification in its own right. However, those students wishing to specialize in the field of Art History in Asia and the Orient or, following their BA, to take the master's programme in Asian Studies with the specialization in Art History in Asia and the Orient should note the following advice from the start of their studies:
 
When studying for a BA in Asian Studies with the goal of taking an MA in Asian Studies with the specialization in Art History in Asia and the Orient, it is recommended that you take the following compulsory elective modules of the core curriculum as of the 3rd semester:
 
  • “Bildkünste und Architektur in Asien und im Orient (Pictorial Arts and Architecture in Asia and the Orient).” This module provides an overview of the genres and media of art history. It additionally gives an introduction to art historical methodology.

  • “Studium und Praxis: Asiatische und orientalische Kunst (Studies and Practice: Asian and Oriental Art).” This module aims to provide initial familiarization with the world of work. Practical, art historical skills are to be gained during an internship.

  • “Studienprojekt: Asiatische und orientalische Kunst (Assignment: Asian and Oriental Art).” In this module, you independently handle a topic of your choice from an academic point of view.

  • In addition, the module “Südasien (South Asia)” gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with fundamental aspects of the art, culture and society in South Asia.

The choice of language has a decisive influence on the later options for studying at the master’s level. The languages recommended for the BA in Asian Studies with the goal of taking the MA in Asian Studies with the specialization in Art History in Asia and the Orient are currently as follows:
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Hindi
  • Indonesian
  • Persian
  • Sanskrit
  • Tibetan
