Why study at the IOA?

The Institute of Oriental and Asian Studies offers students excellent study facilities for all degree levels (BA - MA - PhD). The different departments at the IOA closely cooperate to offer a wide choice of courses about Asia, with options to specialize and select unusual subject combinations.

BA undergraduate students especially benefit from intensive language training covering six terms. Native-speaker language assistants teach four basic courses including oral conversation skills (oral production and interaction), written language, reading and aural comprehension. In addition, introductory lectures focus on Asian history and society.

MA postgraduate students benefit from excellent supervision in small groups of not more than five to eight students. The groups discuss the basic methods of scientific research on a topic of their choice. MA students also participate in the language courses.

Since the winter term 2008/09, the IOA has provided a structured postgraduate study programme for PhD students. In close collaboration with partner institutions at home and abroad, the IOA offers PhD students intensive supervision for dissertation projects covering a wide range of methodologically challenging topics. Vocational elements are also integrated into the programme. Our doctoral students are equipped to assume leading roles in academia, the media and politics.
