This presentation examines COVID-19 beliefs and prevention measures taken in rural Tibetan areas of Kham, at the intersection of modern medical and religious practices. It surveys how Tibetans have experienced and expressed their perspectives on the epidemic and also how– blurring the distinction between modern medical and religious preventive responses–they have reacted to the situation by incorporating religious preventive formulas, traditional Tibetan medicinal practices, and modern public health initiatives. This presentation raises awareness to the phenomenon that in local Tibetan understanding religious practices that others would regard as non-scientific and superstitious count as scientific and effective methods in the fight against the virus, inextricably linked to other cultural and religious beliefs within their tradition.
