"Tibetan Tsha tshas: Ritual aspects, uses and iconographic developments of Buddhist clay images" von Dr. Kunsang Namgyal Lama, Centre for Himalayan Studies (Paris)

Dienstag, 26. Januar 2021 18 (c.t.) – 20 Uhr (on Zoom)

Very commonplace in the Tibetan world, tsha tshas are clay impressions produced from a mould depicting, either in relief or moulded in the round, stūpas, Buddhist deities, historical figures and inscriptions. Making them is essentially considered to be a religious practice intended to generate and accumulate merit but also to purify negative deeds and obscurations. This Buddhist practice of Indian origin has undergone in the Tibetan world significant ritual, textual and artistic developments since its introduction in about the 8th-9th centuries to the present day.

This lecture will discuss how these easily manufactured clay images, of apparent banality, are in fact complex ritual objects made for different religious purposes. It will also consider the unsuspected iconographic and stylistic diversity found in
tsha tshas, as well as the variety of inscriptions on them.
